The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team got off to a red-hot start, but Highland roared back to defeat the Chargers 14-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13 on Wednesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Sandburg (5-6) raced to early leads of 9-2 and 18-5 in the opening set as it hit .455 in the first set, with 11 kills and only one error on 22 attacks. But the Chargers hit just .212, .125 and .065 over the final three sets.

Freshman Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) led the Chargers in kills (10), digs (21) and aces (two) in the match. Annie McKim (Yates City, Ill./homeschooled) and Gracie Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) each added eight kills, and Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) had seven. Setter Laney Chiaravalle (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) had 20 assists and 10 digs for Sandburg.

A McKim kill pulled the Chargers even at 12 in the second set, but the Cougars won three straight points and five of the next six to grab the lead for good and even the match.

A 6-0 run on Rademaker’s serve gave the Chargers a 19-18 lead in the third, but Highland regained the lead with six straight points of its own and won the set two points later. Highland took seven straight points in the fourth to go ahead 9-4 in the fourth and never trailed again.
